A haz mat spill near Greenwood forced the temporary closure of Hwy. 80 at Hwys. 169 and 79 today.
A truck traveling from Calumet in Shreveport spilled approximately 50 gallons of a waste product containing benzene and water when the driver applied his brakes at a red light. The product, described as "sludge," spilled from its water separation container onto the highway.
The truck was isolated and decontaminated at a nearby truck stop. The product on the highway was cleaned up by TAS Environmental, a private clean-up company.
No evacuations were necessary, but traffic was diverted from the area for several hours.
The spill remains under investigation by the Caddo Sheriff's Office and the Louisiana State Police.
