HAMMOND, LA — An employee of a college prep program in Tangipahoa Parish has been arrested for engaging in sexual activities with one of the students in the program. He has been charged with prohibited sexual conduct between educator and student.

The sheriff’s office says they began investigating on April 2, 2012 and discovered that James Loyd, 41, of Livingston was having sexual relations with a 17 year old student of Upward Bound.

Upward Bound is a federally funded educational opportunity offered to high school students and is geared toward enhancing the skills needed to prepare them for college

According to authorities, the relationship between Loyd and one of the students is believed to have begun back in December. Officials believe Loyd initiated the relationship and actively pursued the teen.

Loyd is employed at Upward Bound as a supplemental instructor. He is also employed as a laboratory coordinator with the Chemistry and Physics Department at Southeaster Louisiana University since 2007.

Loyd was arrested and taken into custody in Livingston.

Officials say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
