A deer darting across the road caused a major traffic accident this morning, leaving one man hospitalized.

Dr. William Steen Jr., 71, was operating a BMW motorcycle westbound in the 6800 block of South Lakeshore when a deer darted into the roadway. Witnesses said the deer knocked Steen off the motorcycle and onto the pavement. The deer then hit an eastbound Jeep Liberty and finally came to rest on the side of the road where it was found dead. Steen's motorcycle traveled upright about 474 feet before stopping off-road in thick brush.

Steen was airlifted to LSU Health Sciences Center where he was receiving treatment this morning for major injuries. His condition was not immediately known. There were no other injuries reported from the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by the Caddo Sheriff's Office Traffic Safety Unit.
