Ruston officer shot, in stable condition

38-year-old Ruston Police Corporal Marchale Canty is in stable condition after being wounded by gunfire in the early Monday. At approximately 1:20 a.m. Corporal Canty responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle on the lot of Ambrose Automotive on the South Service Road in Ruston.

Corporal Canty made contact with a black male suspect who apparently opened fire on Corporal Canty, striking him several times. The suspect then fled the scene in blue SUV, possibly a Dodge Durango.

Corporal Canty was able to call for help and within minutes was transported to the Northern Louisiana Medical Center for treatment. He was then airlifted to LSU Hospital in Shreveport where he underwent emergency surgery. At this time Corporal Canty is in stable condition.

Several local agencies responded to assist in the ongoing investigation; these included the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Department, Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Department, Bienville Parish Sheriff’s Department, West Monroe Police Department, Louisiana State Police, Ruston Fire Department, and the Louisiana Tech Police Department.
