Region G of the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force conducted a Child Safety Seat Checkup Event at Sheriff's Safety Town in Shreveport on Saturday, September 25, 2010. The checkup event was the culmination of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Child Passenger Safety Week/ Seat Check Saturday. The Task Force conducted similar events all around the state.
Technicians from the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office, Shreveport Police Department, Louisiana State Police, and LSUHSC Children's Hospital checked 44 child restraint systems between 9AM and Noon. Almost all had some form of misuse. Six replacement seats were distributed to persons who either had no seat for their child, their child's current seat was defective or damaged,or the child had outgrown their current seat.
Several local retailers provided volunteers and supplies for the checkup including Kohl's 7651 Youree Dr, McDonald's 8996 Mansfield Rd, Burlington Coat Factory 8924 Jewella. Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office Reserve Units assisted and local media partners were on scene.
Nationally and locally over 80 percent of child restraint systems are not used properly. The Caddo Sheriff's Office provides free checkups by appointment at any of its substations or Sheriff's Safety Town.
