A fatal hit-and-run accident happened on I-20 in Bossier City Monday night. The accident left one woman dead and a man behind bars.
Bossier City Police spokesman Mark Natale said that the accident is a tragic thing, and it "could've certainly been avoided."
Around 8:20 p.m. Monday night, Bossier City Police responded to a call for a fatal hit-and-run incident on I-20 Westbound at Hamilton Road. Witnesses told police that a woman's car had been stopped in the far right lane on the interstate possibly due to mechanical problems with her vehicle. As she stepped out of her vehicle, she was hit by a passing car. The woman identified as Sarah Gillespe, 66, died at the scene.
Police later made contact with that driver who was identified as Luis Diaz, 36, at his Shreveport home. Diaz had called 911 about two hours after the accident occurred saying that he believed he had hit a pedestrian earlier in the evening. Diaz was arrested on several charges including vehicular homicide and a DWI second offense.
Natale described the accident as a violent impact and that it would be difficult for a driver not to realize that they had hit an individual in this manner.
Bossier City Police do suggest that if you have car trouble on a busy street or interstate, then you should try to keep control of your car as you maneuver out of the main lanes. Pull off onto a shoulder lane if possible and contact authorities.
