Kids at failing public schools could receive vouchers

A plan for children in failing schools to go to a private school is one step closer to being a reality.

State officials say it is cheaper to take kids out of failing public schools and put them into private ones.

The plan is give parents of kids in academically unacceptable schools a voucher for up to $4,000.

That money would go toward putting the child in a private school.

The proposal was approved by the streamline commission earlier this week and it will be on the governor's desk January 4th.

After that, it heads to the legislature for debate.
