If you want to get a job right out of school, get an associate degree from a technical or community college in Louisiana. That's according to a recent Employment Outcomes Report.
The report showed that almost 73 percent of Louisiana students who finish technical or community college programs have jobs within 18 months. That's compared to 60 percent of students with bachelor's degrees. That number sank to 50 percent for those with professional degrees.
So why is there so much more work for those with associate degrees? Chancellor Jim Henderson of Bossier Parish Community College says it has everything to do with the field they choose. "It's because of the industry and it's because of the general levels of supply and demand...finding highly skilled workers in those fields." And most two-year associate programs are in rapidly growing fields, he adds, like healthcare and the oil and gas industry.
There is one bright spot for those wtih advanced degrees, however. Studies show that although associate degree holders may find jobs more quickly, the more education employees have, the faster they're promoted. And that means a faster climb up the wage ladder.
