Texarkana, Tx (KMSS) — Every year, 9,300 Americans are seriously injured from fireworks, and not only that, annually 20,000 fires are caused from fireworks. Locally, that trend continued. In Texarkana, TX, where fireworks are illegal, the TTFD responded to 10 fires possibly related to fireworks.
Just outside the city, the situation was even worse. The Liberty Eylau Volunteer Fire Department was called to 7 firework related fires on the 4th, one of which was deadly.
The fire is still being investigated, but neighbors say the fire may have been caused by fireworks not put out properly. A man in his 60's was killed in the fire, and his wife was treated and released with first degree burns. The couple had 2 dogs, both of which are unaccounted for.
This loss of life is even more tragic because it could have been prevented. The Liberty Eylau Volunteer Fire Department released a list of firework safety tips on Wednesday, hoping to prevent fires.
Back inside the city limits, the fire department isn't naive enough to believe people won't go into either Arkansas or the county to by fireworks, but they hope that everybody be responsible and follow directions when setting off fireworks.
