2 skunks test positive for rabies in Stonewall

In the past 10 day, two skunks in the city limits of Stonewall have tested positive for rabies. Both skunks have been put down, but parish officials don't want to take any chances with the number of positive rabies tests growing.

Saturday, from 8am to noon, the parish, with the help of Pine Ridge Veterinary Center will be holding a rabies vaccination clinic for cats and dogs. The vaccine will be give for $15. If pets are not microchipped, those will also be available for $15 as well.

There is no cure for rabies in cats and dogs. If the animals test positive for the disease, for the most part, law requires that they be put down, While rabies cases aren't too common, the vaccine can be thought of as an insurance policy. By giving pets the vaccine, pet guardians don't have to worry should an outbreak occur.

Not only are rabies vaccines a good idea when it comes to pet safety, they are also the law. In Louisiana, cats and dogs are required to be vaccinated against rabies once a year.
