Barksdale medic awarded Purple Heart

Thursday, February 7, 2013 - 5:38pm

In front of all of her peers, Staff Sergeant Jasmine Russell was awarded a Purple Medal.

From December 2010 until June 2011, Russell was deployed to Afghanistan as a logistics convoy medic.

On January 7, Russell was riding in a convoy when an IED went off, hitting Russell. The blast was so powerful, it took the side off of the truck she was in.

After the explosion, Russell went to work, caring for others that were injured in the blast.

It wasn't until later that Russell found out she had suffered a grade two concussion, later classified as a mild form of Traumatic Brain Injury. After a two-year, eight day campaign, Russell received her medal.
