The Bossier City Fire Department today responded to a local commercial waste disposal center after an outdoor pile of debris caught fire and threatened to burn a nearby wooded area.

Fire crews were called to Southern Disposal Service in the 3300 block of Old Shed Road at approximately 11:50 p.m., after burning embers from an incinerator were blown into a large pile of debris comprised mostly of old pallets and other wooden waste products. The fire sent a huge cloud of black smoke into the sky and threatened a tree-lined wooded area next to the pile.

Firefighters utilized several pieces of fire apparatus to battle the blaze including the department’s tanker truck and brush truck along with its large ladder truck that sprayed an aerial stream of water onto the burning pile. At one time firefighters had six streams of water flowing on the burning heap.

Crews had the fire out in approximately 30 minutes with the assistance of a large track hoe from the business that was used to spread out the burning pile to help firefighters get water on all the hot spots. As a result, firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to the nearby wooded area.

There were no reported injuries.
