Governor Rick Perry announced on Friday, the Major Disaster Declaration for West, TX has been approved.

“The approval of the state's appeal for a major disaster declaration is great and welcome news for the people of West. I appreciate everyone who joined me in standing with the people whose lives have been forever impacted to move this appeal forward, especially our congressional delegation,” Gov. Perry said. “This, along with the disaster relief funding provided by the Texas Legislature, will help this community rebuild their infrastructure, school district and public works as quickly as possible.”

According to West Mayor Tommy Muska, funds are needed to cover $57-million in damages, including $40-million to reconstruct the school.

Prior to the delcaration, Perry received a letter from the Federal Emergency Management Agency saying they are not going to provide money to assist in rebuilding a Central Texas town that was ripped apart by a fertilizer plant explosion

The letter stated FEMA reviewed the appeal for funds to help West, Texas, but according to standards FEMA has, the impact from the explosion is not severe enough to warrant aid.
