Confirmed tornado causes major damage to homes in Baker
BAKER, LA (NBC33) — The National Weather Service confirms that an EF1 tornado touched down in Baker this morning. Winds reached an estimated strength of 105 mph, causing major damage along its path. Residents in the area described it as a short, but terrifying experience.
Terri Easterly heard severe weather that damaged several spots in Baker Monday morning. She said it was five minutes of terror she'll never forget.
"I jumped in my bathtub and was praying baby Jesus it's not going to hit us. I heard it come through. It was loud, loud, loud and I saw limbs flying, limbs cracking. One fell by my house missed my house, missed my truck,” stated Easterly.
Easterly barely avoided disaster, but not all of her neighbors were so lucky. A tree came crashing down on Renwick Jarvis' house. It barely missed him, his two kids and his wife.
"Around 6:30-7 I just heard a loud bang. I jumped up first thing I grabbed my little girl, like Lord what's going on? I didn't know what's going on!" says Jarvis.
Jarvis had just moved into the house with his family two months ago. His relatives from Oklahoma were planning on staying with him when they came into town for Christmas. Now, he's not even sure where he's going to sleep.
"I've never been this close to nothing like this before," says Jarvis.
But despite all the damage they know it could have been so much worse.
"We're just blessed my family's ok and we can live after this," says Jarvis.
"You can replace all this property and cut down trees and limbs, but you cannot replace life and we're all ok in our neighborhood," says Easterly.
