Students get hands on experience
SHREVEPORT, La. (KMSS) — More than eighty north and central Louisiana high school juniors and seniors interested in the medical field got the chance to participate in LSU Health's day with the doctors.
The day included hands on work shops and meetings with medical professionals. Students even got the chance to get one-on-one advice from current medical students.
“I wanted to try to branch out and do something different cause that is what stands out on your resume to apply to medical school or just to even get a job,” said high school student Caroline Tannehill.
Students were selected by their schools based on academic achievement, civic leadership and previous AHEC involvement. Many live in rural and medically underserved areas.
“We have so many things that are not actually out in the rural community hospitals, so it gives them the chance to see what it’s like in a medical center teaching hospital,” said Debbie Henry who heads the program at LSU Health.
Day with the Doctors was jointly sponsored by the North Louisiana Area Health Education Centers (AHEC), Central Louisiana AHEC and the AHEC program office at LSU Health Shreveport.
