SAN JUAN, TX ( KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — An incurable disease is threatening the citrus industry across the country.
Citrus greening is a disease that doesn't allow citrus to ripen. It's already hit the state of Florida hard, gutting a third of its orange groves.
Citrus is a $200 million industry in Texas. Officials have already quarantined a five-mile area in San Juan. That's where a case of citrus greening was confirmed. Many millions of dollars are being spent nationwide to find a cure.
"If we can find it early, we can at least slow the spread, and buy some time until we hope the scientists can come up with some solutions for the disease," said Ray Prewett, president of the Texas Citrus Mutual. "But literally, this could be the end of the citrus industry as we know it in the Rio Grande Valley if we're not successful."
