Evacuations extended around Camp Minden

Tuesday, December 4, 2012 - 9:41pm

Louisiana State Police are optimistic that they are over the hump, but they know there is still a lot of work to be done in moving illegally stored explosives at Camp Minden.

It seems that the challenges in this process just keep coming. They first estimated the project to be done over the weekend, and then by Tuesday, and now they are hoping it will be done by Thursday.

But one major factor in this process is completely out of their hands; the weather.

All work moving the explosives will have to be totally stopped if lightning comes within a five mile radius of Camp Minden, which could make the process take even longer than LSP is hoping.

As it is, Doyline evacuations have been extended through at least Thursday, and the school is closed for that duration as well.

With the general election coming up over the weekend, the Webster Sheriff's Office has moved the polling location for both precincts to the West Lake Baptist Church, not far from the evacuation zone.

But LSP, the Sheriff's Office and everybody else involved in this procedure is hoping the weather holds out and they are able to finish on Thursday.
