Topsfield, Mass. (WCVB) — This is a picture you have to see to believe, after an ax flew off a truck and smashed through someone's car on the freeway. A woman narrowly escaped with her life.
The axe came within inches of a woman sitting in the passenger seat of their car. A sharp blade sliced right through the windshield and lodged into the dashboard.
"I suppose you could say the worst possible piece of debris you could think of coming," said state police.
Law enfocement stated the axe flew off a landscaping truck, traveling down 95 through Topsfield Wednesday morning.
As it hit the highway and then spun through the air, the driver in the car following had no time to react.
"If it had any more inertia behind it or if they were traveling a little faster, one can speculate the axe would gone through and struck," said police.
Investigators reported the man driving the truck left it sitting on the hood when he left a job. Somehow, he never noticed it.
State police said it's a frightening lesson for anyone hauling tools or cargo.
"This time of year, we see it an awful lot. It's usually beach chairs and coolers and kayaks and canoes and things like that."
