How are you celebrating National Donor Day?

Thursday, February 14, 2013 - 7:29pm

Not only is February 14 Valentine's Day, it's also National Donor Day.

One person can save 8 lives through organ donation and enhance many others through tissue donation. Last year alone, organ donors made more than 28,000 transplants possible. Another one million people received cornea and other tissue transplants that helped them recover from trauma, bone damage, spinal injuries, burns, hearing impairment and vision loss. That's why the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency is urging everybody to sign up to be a donor for National Donor Day.

In Louisiana, 170 people gave organs to others in 2012. With about 116,000 people on the donor list nationwide, and over 1,600 in Louisiana, that 170 donors didn't reach everybody. To make matters worse, every day, about 18 people are added to the donation list.

Signing up to be a donor is easy. For more information on organ and tissue donation, as well as how to sign up, visit the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency's website.
