I Love the Ark-La-Tex: Burge's Hickory Smoked Turkeys and Hams

Lewisville, Arkansas may be home to only about 1,200 people, but I would put money on the fact that everyone of those 1,200 people have visited Burge's Smoked Turkey and Ham at the corner of 6th and Spruce. If not, they're missing out.

Driving through town, it's impossible to miss the corner restaurant, both from its prime location and the delicious smells of hickory smoked barbecue coming from the building. The first time I saw it, I just knew this barbecue was going to be something special. It seems, I'm not the only one who felt that way. After moving to Lewisville as a teen, Kim Llyod was intrigued by the restuarant, and that didn't change after she tried their offerings. She's now one of their fabulous employees, and one who will hold a special place with me...she showed me how to make my first Burge's strawberry milkshake. Unlike many places, Burge's still uses real strawberries!

Delighted after my sweet treat, I knew I needed to sample more of Burge's perfection, so I went to the kitchen to have Terry Johnson show me the ropes. A barbecue lover, the first thing I had to try was their sliced pork sandwich. Burge's smokes all their meat on-site, and that patient smoking makes everything even more delicious!

I wasn't done after the barbecue, next I had to try one of their hamburgers. While their burgers are perfect, with seasons and fresh meat, it's the buttered bun that makes all the difference. Once I tried that, I couldn't stop myself from eating everything.

I'm not the only Shreveportian who is hooked on Burge's. Every year, the Colbert family stops for all their favorites on their annual vacation. This year, if it's at all possible, the family agreed the food was better than ever. I choose to think it's because I was helping out in the kitchen.

And Burge's Smoked Turkey and Ham is just another reason I love the Ark-La-Tex!
