Natchitoches, LA (KMSS) — Natchitoches is synonymous with meat pies. Having never had one, I asked around to see where I should go; I got just one answer, Lasyone's Meat Pie Restaurant at 622 2nd Street in Natchitoches.
Well, I knew where I was heading, but what makes theirs so special. Head chef and owner Angela Lasyone told me it was all in the dough. Even when I begged, she wouldn't tell me the secret to her dough. That's ok, I'm better at ordering anyway. Cooking is not my strong suit.
Now came the tough decision; what to order. I knew I needed to try a meat pie, but I felt like trying even more. Before I could decide I ran into a couple from Lafayette. I really liked them until they implied food from southern Louisiana is best. I pretended to be impartial, and offered to give my expert analysis on Lasyone's food, representing the northern half of the state.
First on my list, salad. But not just any salad, This one had mixed greens tossed with purple grapes, mandarin oranges, sunflower seeds, feta cheese topped with our special seasoned, chicken tenderloin strips. And Angela must have know my weakness; her Creole honey dressing is made with Splenda!
After I tried it, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I wanted to keep eating it, but I knew I had a lot to try. Next up, green beans. Don't worry, they were fried, this is the South after all. Wow, and I thought that salad was good.
Then, time for their namesake, the meat pie. I'd say more about it, but I don't want to stop eating it!
No question about it, Lasyone's Meat Pie Restaurant is a must stop.
And that's just another reason I love the Ark-La-Tex.
