Natchitoches, La (KMSS) — It's no secret that I love the Ark-La-Tex, but did you know former Laker Shaquille O'Neal does too? He loves it so much, he refers to Natchitoches as Shaq-itoches. The NBA legend came back to his college state to be inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches.
I was able to speak with 2 of the inductees, Shaq and tennis great Chanda Rubin who both said this honor means so much to them because of where it originates, Louisiana. For both, Louisiana is a place that means a lot to them... although Shaq kept getting sidetracked and going over all of the Louisiana foods he loves.
While the 2013 class is the first group to be inducted into the brand new museum in Natchitoches, they aren't the first class in the museum. Other inductees include NFL and San Diego State star, Marshall Faulk. As a fellow Aztec, I followed Faulk in college, but it wasn't until I saw his bobble head in the museum that I learned he was from New Orleans.
Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne has his favorite part of the museum as well, extremely close to it because he donated it. Growing up, Dardenne was a huge fan of Pistol Pete, so he has his childhood scrapbook on display at the museum.
Louisiana is a place known for sports; knowing that, Shaq worked extra hard to make sure he lived up to that renowned history.
I'd say he achieved his goal.
And that's just another reason I love the Ark-La-Tex.
