Independence Bowl brings more than football to Shreveport

Wednesday, December 26, 2012 - 6:00pm

Independence Bowl week might only be about football for some visitors, but for the local economy, it's much more.

In 2006, the game brought more that 5.7 million dollars to the local economy, and the hope is that this year will be even more successful.

Since the University of Louisiana at Monroe is so close, bowl coordinators are trying to plan as many events as possible surrounding the bowl, to entice people to spend the night in town.

But with Ohio much farther away, some fans decided to come out early and spend Christmas and the rest of the week exploring Shreveport.

Hoping to bring these visitors to more than just bowl related events, the local tourism board has compiled a booklet of all holiday related celebrations, and in the spirit of the season, have named it the Holly Jolly Handbook.
