Louisiana musicians rack up nominations for 2013 Grammy Awards

Thursday, December 6, 2012 - 6:09pm

From the streets of New Orleans to Acadiana Cajun roots, Louisiana is represented well in the nomination list for the 2013 list of Grammy Awards.

New Orleans-based R&B artist Frank Ocean leads the pack with an impressive six nominations, including Best New Artist. The 25-year-old officially launched his solo career back in July with the release of his debut album, “Channel Orange.” Prior to going it alone, Ocean was a member of Odd Future, an alternative hip hop collective.

Legendary New Orleans musician Dr. John landed on the nominee list for “Locked Down” in the category of Best Blues Album. Notably, the album features Dan Auerbach, guitarist and singer for The Black Keys.

With no surprise, Louisiana music gained two spots in the category of Best Regional Roots album with good ol’ Cajun music by The Band Courtbouillon. The supergroup consists of heavy hitters Wayne Toups, Steve Riley and Wilson Savoy.

“It’s a wonderful feeling,” Lucious Fontenot, part owner of Valcour Records – the label that released the band’s self-titled album, said. “Two years ago they took away the Cajun and Zydeco category. This is such a wider group of genres, so it make sit more of an achievement to win, should it happen, because you’re going up against different types of music.”

Also nominated in the same category is Corey Ledet & His Zydeco Band.

The 55th Grammy Awards are Feb. 10, 2013.
