Vicksburg, MS — Early Wednesday morning on I-20 westbound there was a crash involving six eighteen wheelers on the Mississippi River Bridge. A tanker truck carrying a corrosive/flammable liquid material was struck from behind. The impact resulted in the tanker's liquid line severing which caused the hazardous material to leak into the river. Cleanup crews are still on the scene.
Several other collisions occurred on the bridge following the initial crash and there have been reports of multiple injuries but, no fatalities. The Coast Guard has since closed the Mississippi River to water traffic.
At this time, Louisiana State Police say it is not safe to travel on the bridge and they do not know when it will be reopened.
Until I-20 is reopened, traffic that needs to cross the river is being diverted south onto US Hwy 65 to Natchez and north to US Hwy 65 to Greenville.
