Shreveport, LA (KMSS) — A Shreveport Police officer shot and killed a man after he came toward police and fire officials with a knife.
Just before 8, the Shreveport Fire Department was called to a house in the 500 block of Americana Drive in the city's Dixie Gardens neighborhood to help a man who was having trouble breathing. While they were there, the man got a knife from the kitchen.
Once the man grabbed the knife, SFD asked for help from the police department.
Police arrived at the house quickly, telling the man to put down the knife several times. After refusing to put down the knife, officers say the man starting coming toward them. In response to his aggressive movements, an unnamed SPD officer fired a single shot at the man, hitting him in the upper body.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Police Chief Willie Shaw, who was on scene last evening, made this statement about the officer involved shooting, “This is terrible tragedy for all involved and our prayers are with the officer and the family of the deceased.”
After an officer involved shooting, the officer is placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation is done.
