State committee discusses how to keep Louisiana schools safe

Thursday, February 28, 2013 - 7:11pm

At a committee meeting held at the State Capitol today, officials discussed school security around the state.

Superintendent John White shared the results of a recent survey he sent out to all the districts in Louisiana, in which almost every district reported having a plan in place in the event of a crisis.

However, White said fewer than half of the districts got help from law enforcement in designing their plan, and the percentage drops again when considering individual schools.

“For what it's worth, since the tragedy at Sandy Hook, more than half of the respondents indicated that they have revised, reviewed and revised their plans," stated White.

White said he has considered moving counselors from state offices into schools, as a low-cost way to help kids feel safe, but there is too much red tape involved for that to be a realistic solution.
