Safe driving tips for winter weather

Tuesday, January 15, 2013 - 9:36am

The first significant winter weather of the season has arrived in our area and reports are coming in all over North Louisiana of slippery area bridges, overpasses and elevated ramps. We would like to remind everyone to use extreme caution when driving today. Here are a few tips to keep you safe.

  • DO NOT hit the breaks when you hit a patch of ice. Instead, gently steer in the direction of the skid until you regain traction.
  • Leave plenty of room, about 1 1/2 - 2 car lengths, between you and the vehicle in front of you. If you need to stop or slow down you will have plenty of time. Avoid slamming on the brakes.
  • Plan ahead and give yourself some extra time to get where you are going because you may have to travel well below the posted speed limit.
  • Pay attention and obey "Road Closed" barricades. They are there for your safety and it is illegal to travel around them.
