Rays beat Rangers 5-2 in AL Wild Card tiebreaker, end season 91-72

The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Texas Rangers, 5-2, Monday night in Arlington.

For the first time since 2009, Major League Baseball needed a 163rd game to complete the regular season.

The teams were playing in the American League Wild Card tiebreaker.

The Rays (92-71) scored a run in the top of the first inning on a Delmon Young sacrifice fly, two runs in the top of the third on an Evan Longoria two-run homer and one in the top of the sixth.

The Rangers, who activated Nelson Cruz after serving a 50-game suspension for using performance enhancing drugs, finished the 2013 season with a record of 91-72. They collected one run in the bottom of the third and another in the sixth against the Rays.

Rays' pitcher, David Price, threw a complete game for Tampa with four strikeouts and two earned runs.

Both teams came into tonight's matchup with identical 91-71 records, but needed that extra win to solidify a playoff berth.

Tampa will travel to Cleveland to take on the Indians (92-70) in the Wild Card game at 8:00 p.m., Wednesday.

The winner of the Rays and Indians elimination game will go on to face the David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox in the best-of-five American League Division Series.
